About Greg

My father died in 2024. In the months after, I began painting and writing stories that moved closer to the quiet truths of how people actually live — long marriages, private grief, the places we return to even when we shouldn’t.

Until recently, I’ve mostly written crime fiction under Gregory Payette—twenty-five novels in all. I’m proud of that work, and it remains part of my catalog.

But over time I realized the stories pulling at me weren’t only about who committed the crime.

They were about the man sitting alone at the counter of a small Rhode Island diner. An old figure standing at the edge of the New Hampshire woods. A husband and wife driving to Maine one last time before the rain comes in. A woman going home after too many years away…

That’s the work now — fiction, paintings, and narrative projects that live somewhere between the two.

I was born outside Providence. I live in North Carolina now, which still surprises me some mornings.
